Raison D’être

Hello and welcome to my blog! After years of consideration and hesitation, it is finally here. My blog will focus on art history, especially concerning art movements and artists that I think have been overlooked. I have decided to blog about overlooked art because—simply—I love it, and I wish to preserve the contributions and diversity that have moved and continue to move the world.

Every creator and consumer of art has been influenced by a long lineage of earlier creators. I believe wholeheartedly that the saying “standing on the shoulders of giants” applies not only to scientific endeavors but also to artistic ones. I therefore hope no art is forgotten; when art is lost, a long lineage of creative influence forever perishes. The world becomes blander as unique expressions of the human mind are lost forever.

Central to my purpose is that art is not just the result of techniques changing over time. Impressionism did not break from the status quo of academic art simply because Monet decided to change how his paintings were made. Instead, Impressionism’s break was part of a greater reflection of the time and sentiment. Art is more than colors on canvas or clay morphed into shapes. Art reflects the time, sentiments, and character of not only the individual but the societies they lived under. By using art, one can better understand the time and place where it emerged. To neglect art is to neglect one of the most lucid ways to understand history, and consequently humanity.

Currently, I am a college student living in the United States (so don’t expect consistency with my posts). I studied art history in high school and continue to self-educate while in university. Despite considering myself only an amateur in art history, I am deeply passionate about the topic. The artworks I highlight are pieces that I find interesting, pleasing, and worth being remembered. I usually find the artwork I wish to write about online, in the museums I visit, or through recommendations from friends and family.

I consider a work of art neglected when there is a lack of easily accessible and educative information online. I also consider neglected works as ones that people simply don’t know much about. I wish to bring attention to such works and give them another platform to be enjoyed.

All views I express are my own. When giving information about an artist and their work, I will try my best to compile the most accurate information possible. I hope that from reading my blog, you will stumble upon some interesting artists and learn a thing or two. If I can do that, I have achieved my goal.

Once again, welcome to my blog. I hope you get something out of your visit here, and I appreciate you taking the time to hear what one guy thinks is valuable. I hope you enjoy this blog as much as I do creating it.

Best,

UPaper
